A Quick Movie Review Ditty

I watched these movies this week..

The Descendants - great movie. I may be biased because George Clooney is my favorite actor, but that Golden Globe win and Oscar nom for Best Picture back up my statement. I haven’t seen all the Oscar noms yet so I can’t vouch for it being the Best. Supposedly Moneyball is really good….

HappyThankYouMorePlease - this came out awhile ago, and Josh Radnor’s new movie just hit sundance, but I finally watched it. It’s a good pick on Netflix. I enjoyed it, a little all over the place and kind of far fetched at times, but it’s one of those good indie movies with a hip soundtrack. Props to Andy Gowan on the supervision.

Tim  & Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie - awesome, amazing, great job! This is by far one of the silliest, most ridiculous, over the top, hilarious movies I’ve seen. I loved it. Not necessarily a “good” movie in terms of a critics review, but I laughed out loud almost the entire time. Plus the fact that they released it on VOD first is pretty cool. So make sure you actually pay for it, not torrent. SHRRIIIIIMMMM!

That is it for now.

New Taking Back Sunday song featuring the original line up. On the surface it’s not as “original line up” sounding as a die hard Tell All Your Friends fan would want, but it’s definitely good. I’ve listened to it a couple of times, and it’s passion and energy really rock and stick with you. I think this is the most I’ve heard Adam Lazzara scream on a track, which is kind of fun. I imagine it’d be really energetic live. I’d like a little more vocal from John Nolan, but this is only one song of a full album of new tracks. There was another song they put up online awhile ago, but I don’t recall if it was the final version or not. I want to go find that now.. Anyways, for now give this a chance. If you don’t dig it right away, I wouldn’t give up on them quite yet. Taking Back Sunday is back and channeling that ‘02 teen angst we’re all so nostalgic for.

Rebecca Black and the industry..

I feel like rambling about Rebecca Black and music industry things. I assume by now everyone has seen the video for “Friday.” We’ve all laughed, made fun, etc. But what’s funny, is that it’s fairly successful. For now at least..

Over the weekend my friend Henry showed me a slew of new hip hop acts I need to listen to. Among them is one that really jumped out at me, only none of the music or raps are new at all.

A group called Safety Words took the 8bit music and samples from about 40 nintendo games and mashed it with Wu Tang Clan and Ghostface Killah. The results is The Ghostfaced Pixels Mixtape. and basically, it’s fucking awesome.

I uploaded one of my favorite tracks but check out this link, you can stream a couple other songs to check it out, or download the whole mixtape there for free:

edit: that last link didn’t work. try this one.

Absolutely bonkers battle involving every Power Ranger in existence.

Patrick “Secret-Middle-Name” Lawler

I met Patrick Lawler when I was 17 in High School, where he proceeded to Yoko Ono the band I was in at the time and forever ruined my chance at being in a mediocre screamo band. However, he was fun to hang out with so I accepted him into my life that was just beginning to blossum out of my terrible awkward shell.

Patrick then went to Belgium for a year, and I believe I was the only one from SLO to go visit him. I may or not have been on a family trip in Europe and was more or less in the area so it was convenient for us to stop by, but I like to tell people I flew half way around the world just to visit him. Anyways, we hella bonded that trip, and even more the following summer when he came back. Then I helped him move to Santa Barbara. We’ve been best friends ever since he woke me up to See You Next Tuesday after sleeping on the floor of his new apartment. I visited all the time when he lived in SB, like.. once a month at least. Then when he moved to SF I visited less frequently, but still did nonetheless.

So then I decide to move to LA, Patrick helps me move down but what does Patrick do 4 months later? Move back to SLO. The fuck, right?

But now, today, he is moving to LA as well. And I’m incredibly excited to live close to each other again (as it hasn’t happened since High School). We’re only like half hour or so away from each other which is nothing in LA time.

Anyways, I’m stoked and thought I’d share with the world!

We’re really fun to hang out with, I strongly suggest you join. We put the LA in HELLA!

L.O.V.E.

Today in my class my musicianship teacher was talking about vday and songs that have ‘love’ in the title and whoever could write down the most won a prize.. thanks to my vass knowledge of emo and pop punk bands that have songs like ‘punch drunk love’ ‘love like woe’ and ‘love is murder’ I made a healthy list and won. hahaha. I prepped my list with “most of these are newer bands..” and he was like “of course they are” and laughed at me.

I won some candy, pretty BA.

Dana Carvey recently hosted Saturday Night Live and Mike Meyers came as a surprise guest for them to reprise Wayne’s World. Watch them talk about this year’s Oscar Nominations. Classic SNL, I love this.

Oscar Nominations

They always say, everyone’s a critic; and that is especially true when the Academy Awards announces their nominations. I feel like the majority of the nominations were fairly predictable, but there are a few upsets and surprises. I would have liked to seen Andrew Garfield and Joseph Gorden Levett for Best Supporting Actor, Christopher Nolan for Best Director, Shutter Island would have been cool in Best Picture, Leonardo Dicaprio for Best Actor from either Inception or Shutter Island. Tron: Legacy definitely should have been in Visual Effects and maybe Art Direction. I understand why Clint Mansell couldn’t be nominated for Best Original Score, but it’d be nice to see him get the recognition.

However, there are only 5 slots (save for Best Pictuer) and looking at the list, it’s hard for me to say the ones that got nominated shouldn’t have been. Especially when I haven’t seen a few of the movies yet so I can’t particularly judge them. But those are just a few I feel deserve some attention.

Now it’s time to catch up on the movies I haven’t seen to accurately pick my favorites. If you haven’t seen the nominations list, check it out here:
